Korean scientists have discovered a gene in plants that can increase the absorption of carbon dioxide, paving the way for air-purifying plants that can reduce greenhouse gases.
Prof. Lee Young-sook and Dr. Lee Mi-young of Pohang University of Science and Technology Life Sciences Department said they discovered the AtABCB14 gene, which controls stomatal movements according to the level of carbon dioxide.
A collaboration with Prof. Enrico Martinoia of the University of Zurich, the study was published on the Sunday online edition of Nature Cell Biology.
Prof. Lee Young-sook said, ¡°The finding will help develop plants that can be used to reduce greenhouse gas by controlling the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed.¡±
