LPGA Relents on English-Only Rule
The U.S. Ladies Professional Golf Association on Saturday decided not to introduce a new regulation compelling LPGA players to speak English, which it had intended to implement in 2009. The LPGA Tour previously threatened to suspend membership of players who do not speak adequate English.

The LPGA U-turn came after protests from LPGA players, PGA Tour golfers, major press outlets including the New York Times, politicians, and LPGA sponsor State Farm.

"The LPGA will announce a revised approach, absent playing penalties, by the end of 2008,Ħħ LPGA Commissioner Carolyn Bivens said in a statement. "We believe there are other ways to achieve our shared objective of supporting and enhancing the business opportunities for every tour player."

But while penalties will likely be eased in the new policy, LPGA players will not be completely relieved of the requirement to speak English.
